My Grandma asked me what I know about the Holocaust and I was able to tell her a lot of facts that dealt with it. For example, Hitler killed a lot of Jews. It also took awhile for the Americans to acknowledge the fact it was happening.

Back in the day, when I was around ages 6-12, I went to Hebrew school once a week. I learned much about the Holacaust. This helped me later in life when I already knew most of what went on when we were taught about it in history class in high school.

ginger4lyfe said...

Knowing about the Holocaust made it very easy for me to write an essay about the it in 9th grade. Knowing about this event was significant to me because I didn't have to waste time looking up information. I already knew about it and was a pro.

My dad once asked me what I thought about the current U.S. world position. Knowing about the components it takes for an empire to fall (particularly Rome), I was able to talk intelligently about the dangers our country is facing, both internally and externally, and how that reflects what has happened to successful empires of the past.

3pandabear said...

When I had to do a project about World War II, it helped that my dad has always tried to inform me as much as possible about the war and the holocaust by having me read articles, talking about it, and watching T.V. specials about the war on the history channel. This made the project a lot easier and I got a better grade because of it.

Chaz Michael Michaels said...

I like the choice of topics....ginger4lyfe and SWAQforDAIZ...The holacaust is something we all have learned about and it is a very significant event in history

When I took the AP Government and APUSH tests, it was really helpful to know the history that was involved in both classes. Understanding the events that happened in history were significant because without that knowledge I would have done very poor on these tests. However, since I knew things about the past I did well.

SWAQforDAIZ said...

Nice post Chaz Micheal Micheals. We posted about the same topic. Learning about it in Hebrew School and in High School was so helpful.

3puppies101 said...

I agree with ginger4lyfe on knowing about the Holocaust before ninth grade because it helped me to write an essay as well.

3Nickiwoof said...

An event from the past that is important to me is the Holocaust. Understanding this event is important because it affects my family history. Unfortunately, members in my family were killed in Poland during the Holocaust so it is helpful to know information about it.

3Silver said...

I learned a lot about the Civil War in school and was able to teach my cousins about what happened. Doing this refreshed my memory on the events of the war and also helped my cousins to learn some new history

3Queen Z said...

I would say that knowing about the Gold Rush of 1947 would be important to me. Knowing about that gives me a better understanding about what people did and gave up to better their own lives at that time in history.

3WillSmith said...

When I studied for midterms and finals freshman year I just studied the night before. I didn't do as good as I wanted to. Then sophomore year and Junior year for finals, midterms, and AP tests, I studied a week before and got much better grades. This is just one of many examples where history helps use not make the same mistakes in the future.

3hubs said...

I agree with 3puppies101 because it is truly helpful to know the history behind certain events for classes other than history classes.

Knowing about the Holocaust has helped a lot throughout the years. When we learn about it in school it is always a good unit for me because I know so much about it from Hebrew School and my family.

ginger4lyfe said...

I agree with Chaz Michael Michaels. Learning about the Holocaust in hebrew school has helped me succeed in history classes in high school. Since I had background knowledge about the topic I was able to succeed in my classes.

3giggles said...

Like SWAQforDAIZ, I too was asked what I knew about the Holocaust, by my grandmother. I had learned so much in school about it, that I was able to tell her a ton of information. I also am fascinated with Anne Frank; therefore, I know a little more information than what was taught in school.

3pandabear said...

I agree with 3hubs because knowing all of the history that we have accumulated over the years definitely helped with the AP Government test and it gave me a good score.

Buttercup said...

A time where knowing something about the past that has helped me is when I have other classes where a little bit of background history knowledge is important. For example, in AP Gov it was helpful to have already taken APUSH to have some knowledge about American history that helped to a very large extent in Government.

3galago said...

Same here 3hubs, knowing about the past made the essays on the AP Gov test a lot easier.

3puppies101 said...

I also agree with 3silver because there has been many times that I have helped my younger family members with history because I remembered various things that I have learned in school.

So heres the deal. My mom and I don't always get along.. Last year I screwed up a lot, especially when got way too many tardies to school. I learned tons from experiencing how the fact that i didn't take catching the bus seriously, effected our relationship. I want this year to be a lot less stressful on both of us, so I'll be a LOT more careful about getting to school on time, this time around.

As I travled to the Holocaust museum in Washington D.C in sixth grade I came to find that an individual was there with a barcode looking tattoo as well as many numbers on his arm. Since I had learned that this type of mark on someone was a Holocaust survivor mark I was able to pay them much respect and learn of the hardships they faced in their life. As well as that six million had lost their lives at this point in history. I feel that this is very siginificant because I will never forget the Holocaust.

To-3Nickiwoof I would have to agree with you knowing about the Holocaust is a very important thing to know about and it did effect my life as too. I am sure my blood line would be larger if this event never happened.

I have been to Israel twice in my life now. i plan to go again in winter. there is an unbeleivable amount of history in that country. I stood in front of the western wall and thought that at one time it was a gaurd wall to protect the house of god from evil people. Not only was it facsinating from a historical point of veiw, it was moving that a nation of people can hold together and join in front of a gaurd wall.

History is a wonderous thing and it helps me almost everyday, like when i was a young lad i went to Italy I didn't understand why there were hammers and sickles every where and then i remembered they were commies and it helped me understand it greatly.

3pandabear said...

I also agree with 3WillSmith because I have definitely learned my mistakes from not studying days in advance for tests. I now know that I need to prepare well in order to do well on tests and quizzes.

Chaz Michael Michaels said...

I agree with panda bear. Watching tv shows sure are helpful! We learn a lot about history from tv shows on the discovery channel and history channel.

@Buttercup You're right. History classes seem to grow on each other and definitely have a correlation with each other no matter what topics they are. Eventually they all blend together in a melting pot of the modern world.

My grandma was the head general of the city she lived in. She was telling me about her life, and how she was a detective. She was also an informant to the KGB. If I had not learned about the history of my country in school, I would have appeared dumb in front of my grandmother if I had not known what the KGB was. She was telling me about how hard it was to live life during that time and she was lucky she had such a high position, otherwise she would have had a much harder life. She raised my father to be grateful for the things he had. In turn, he taught me to do the same.

After going through a Government class, I learned just how complex the governmental process is. Before, I would wonder why there are certain laws that still exist that make no sense. Now, I've learned to have more patience with governmental processes and that not everyone will agree with everyone else's proposals.

soobydoo said...

Learning about how the government worked in the past and learning about how they function today has given me insight to how history really does repeat itself, sometimes negatively and sometimes positively. Knowing a little about government and history should help me to function more efficiently in the world today.

There are many times in history where knowing about the past has helped me. Knowing about the civil rights movement in the US has really helped me know the types of activities that different races had to go through over time, such as the Jim Crow Laws, and racial integration.

I often look back on the civil rights movement and how the gay rights movement will progress in the future. My mind goes to the civil rights movement when there is a step backwards in equal rights, such as South Carolina's ban on same-sex marriage. African American's fought for so long to receive equal rights, and I believe that one day, people in America will look back on the gay rights movement like we today look back on the civil rights movement.

September 11, 2001, a day we will all remember. Most of my classmates as well as myself were only in first grade when the towers came down. However, I can remember exactly where I was, what I was doing, and who I was with. Learning about what happened that day and how everything happened infuriates me. I have watched numerous documentaries about that day, and knowing all of the facts of what happened not only scares me, but also disappoints me. It disappoints me that a human being, like myself, can go to such a level as to risk their life to kill thousands of others. It has really shown me that there are people out there like that, and that not everyone in this world can be trusted.

The Civil Rights Act of 1964 has been immensely significant to me. This is because it solidified the acceptance America has gained over the decades for other races. Learning about the revolutionary war was incredibly significant to me. I like the fact that when citizens of a government are oppressed and abused as much as the American colonists were, they don't just sit back and take it. It influenced many of my beliefs today, both political and general ones. I think that American Government today is fine, but if it ever got to the point where we were oppressed, People would not even think of revolution unless they learned about it from the colonial period. @Carly Rae Jepsen: I was actually just talking about going to the Ford Theatre at dinner a couple of nights ago. I think it's really cool to experience history first hand like going to the Ford Theatre or being in Dallas where JFK was assassinated.

One thing that has help me in my life is the civil rights movement. The civil rights movement has made me thankful for all the opportunites I have in my life. I realize what a great life I have and if it wasn't my ancestor's marching and doing what they thought was right than i woulnd't have this amazing life that I have now.

A time I learned about and hear about til this day is what happened in the history with Martin Luther King. It was very important to me because he was a African American man that was very smart and creative. But my grandamother is 98 and she was alive when all of this was going on, so she told me all about it coming from what saw in her own eyes when it was all happening. It helped me alot because in school we talk about Black History and escpically about Martin Luther King. Understanding this event is important to me and has to do with me is because if it wasn't for him a lot of things right in in my 90s life wouldn't be able to happen. A lot of things would be totally different.

There are so many times where knowing things about the past has helped me greatly. My uncle is in the National Guard. In a few days, he will be leaving for Afghanistan. Knowing about 9/11 and the events that have followed helps me understand what he is doing over in Afghanistan and makes me extremely proud of him.

I agree totally with Carlos, the undercover cop really came and clarified the restrictions of the law. I understand more about what can happen to me now. Knowing this new information will also help me get out of many situations.

I can relate to what @anseladams said. I was too young to understand what was going on on 9/11, and now I am able to fully comprehend the severity of the situation.

I definitely agree with Lightshine, if it weren't for leaders like Martin Luther King Jr. things would be very different indeed.
