STEREOTYPING

Use any of these prompts to help you write about our stereotyping activity:

*Were any stereotypes posted about groups or categories that you belong to? How did it feel to see them "in print"?

*Where do these stereotypes come from? How are they perpetuated?

*Were positive as well as negative stereotypes posted?

*Why should positive stereotypes be avoided?

*What did you learn from this activity? Is there any group that is free of stereotypes?

*What are some things we can do to avoid perpetuating stereotypes?

I think stereotypes come from peoples lack of knowledge about people, culture, and races. Stereotypes are perpetuated by older generations passing on to the younger generations their beliefs. Positive stereotypes should be avoided because by making a general statement like, "all Asians are smart", one believes that any Asian is smart due to this positive stereotyping. To avoid perpetuating stereotypes people need to base their opinions on factual knowledge and not the beliefs of their predecessors.
