Bully Research Assignment
Wednesday, December 14, 2011
Essay Contest deadline for submissions is January 7, 2012.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the presidency of John F. Kennedy. Students are encouraged to participate in the 2012 John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Essay Contest. The Profile in Courage Essay Contest invites United States high school students to consider the concept of political courage by writing an essay on a U.S. elected official who has chosen to do what is right, rather than what is expedient. The winner of the competitive annual contest is awarded a $10,000 prize and is invited to accept the award at the Profile in Courage Award ceremony hosted each May by Caroline Kennedy at the Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum in Boston. The student’s nominating teacher receives a John F. Kennedy Public Service Grant in the amount of $500 and is also invited to attend the Profile in Courage Award ceremony. A second place winner receives $1,000 and up to five finalists each receive $500. All finalists receive a hardcover copy of Profiles in Courage. The essay contest is sponsored by the John F. Kennedy Library Foundation and generously supported by John Hancock Financial. The deadline for submissions is January 7, 2012. Eugenics Today? DUE MONDAY 10/10
The history of eugenics presents many moral and ethical questions. Genetics study today looks at reproductive technologies that will allow parents to create "designer babies". This will be predominantly motivated by individual competitiveness and the desire to create the best opportunities for children, rather than an urge to improve the species as a whole, which characterized the early 20th-century forms of eugenics.
An another example of such individual motivations includes parents attempting to prevent homosexuality in their children, despite lack of evidence of a single genetic cause of homosexuality.
Some scientists argue that eugenics and the conservation of natural resources are similar propositions. Both can be practiced foolishly so as to abuse individual rights, but both can be practiced wisely.
WHAT DO YOU THINK?? SHOULD SCIENTISTS USE CURRENT KNOWLEDGE TO CREATE "PURER, SMARTER, BETTER" BABIES TODAY? IS THERE A PLACE FOR GENETICS (EUGENICS) IN TODAY'S WORLD? AND IF SO, WHERE DOES IT END? HOW FAR DO WE GO? IN ADDTION, COMMENT ON AT LEAST ONE OTHER STUDENT'S BLOG.

Two Town of Jasper
Part of Shawn Berry’s defense was that he was a bystander, not an instigator. The jury did not believe that claim, but assuming that such a situation could occur, what is the responsibility of an observer to an act of racism. Should bystanders who don’t intervene be held culpable in any ways? How might the responsibility to respond be different for blacks and whites? Racist acts can range from extreme violence to a thoughtless comment or joke. Have you ever witnesses any act of racism? What did you do? If the event happened today, would your response be the same? If not, what has changed?
